AHOY! What do Loopers actually DO when they’re not cruising? ⚓️🌴 This week, SeaSHINE isn’t moving an inch—but somehow there’s never a dull moment living aboard a boat in Key West! After months of traveling around America’s Great Loop, we’re spending a few weeks tied up at Stock Island Marina near Key West, Florida. And this episode is a pretty accurate look at what real everyday life aboard a boat looks like when you stop cruising for a while. There’s boat school. Boat projects. Provisioning. Laundry. Packages. West Marine runs. It isn't ALL practical. 😂 Rex discovers that our marina is apparently an all-you-can-catch seafood buffet. He catches a crab, which promptly clamps onto Mark’s hand, and then Rex does what Rex does—cooks it and eats it. 🦀 He also gets stung by a jellyfish, plays with conch and generally continues his quest to personally interact with every creature in the ocean. Meanwhile, our buddy boat CrabSHACK leaves Key West without us, which was a sad milestone after sharing so much of the Great Loop together. ❤️ And then...Valentine’s Day aboard SeaSHINE. ❤️⚓️ Some people want jewelry and flowers. We wanted someone to deep-clean the boat and massages on the flybridge overlooking the water. 😂 Now THAT is romance. Apparently Mark's Valentine's Day wasn't quite relaxing enough, though. After getting burned AND attacked by a crab, the kids decide he needs some additional pampering and give him a full facial—complete with cucumbers over his eyes. AHOY! What does it really take to make it through America’s Great Loop? After 15 months cruising the Great Loop aboard our 56-foot Ocean Alexander, SeaSHINE, our family came home with plenty of boating lessons—but some of the most important lessons had nothing to do with boating. We started America’s Great Loop with one family motto: ❤️ Be Kind. Be Wise. Be Brave. By the time we crossed our wake, we had five. We STOPPED the Great Loop for a month! 🌴⚓️ After months of constantly moving aboard our 56' Ocean Alexander, we finally tied up at Stock Island Marina near Key West, Florida — and stayed put. Welcome to Week 1 of our month living aboard in the Florida Keys! Instead of another leg of America’s Great Loop, this episode is a peek at what happens when full-time cruising slows down and you actually get to LIVE somewhere for a while. Of course, first we had to fix SeaSHINE. 😂 After losing an engine while entering Key West in our last episode, Mark gets to work figuring out what caused the overheating. With the help of both a scuba diver and a mechanic we solve the mystery. The culprit? Sand in the impeller. We get Peaches & Cream back in business, tackle another glamorous boat-life project — repairing a head 🚽😂 — and officially settle into our new home for the month. Then it's time to explore Key West! 🌴 We take our Boston Whaler tender over to a neighboring marina, ride the famous Conch Tour Train, visit the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, wander around town…and I somehow manage to almost get run over by Jimmy Buffett while out for a jog. 😂. Seriously. Just another normal week aboard SeaSHINE. After traveling thousands of miles around America’s Great Loop, it felt wonderfully strange to wake up every morning knowing we weren't going anywhere. No weather windows. No calculating tides. No long cruising days. Just boat projects, family time, exploring Key West and enjoying life in the Florida Keys. Sometimes the adventure is in the going.
